About this tool
The Lagna, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It starts your first house and fixes every other house in the chart. Because the sign changes about every two hours, the exact birth time matters more for the Lagna than for anything else.
The planet that rules your Lagna, the Lagna lord, is treated as the main planet of the chart. Its sign, house and strength colour how the whole chart is read.
Frequently asked questions
How is the Lagna different from the Moon sign and the Sun sign?
The Sun sign is where the Sun was, the Moon sign is where the Moon was, and the Lagna is the sign rising on the horizon. In Vedic astrology all three matter, and the Lagna decides the houses.
What if I am not sure of my birth time?
Try the Lagna for a few nearby times. If it changes, the Lagna is uncertain, and a pandit can help narrow it down with events from your life.
Is this the same as the Western rising sign?
Not usually. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and Vedic astrology the sidereal one, so the Vedic Lagna is often the sign before the Western one.
