In Hindu tradition the first sound of a baby's name is chosen from the Moon's nakshatra at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has its own sound.

Do I have to use the exact letter?
It is a tradition, not a rule. Many families use the letter for the name used in rituals and a different everyday name.
What if the birth time is close to a pada change?
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so a pada lasts a few hours. If the time is uncertain, check the neighbouring pada too.
Can I use the same tool for an adult?
